Split disk from box on day one, because two builders were waiting
Out of its enclosure and onto the bench the morning it arrived, the bare disk tested clean: motor smooth, firmware answering, surfaces reading properly. That left the bridge board condemned by elimination — and meant imaging could begin the same afternoon.
Keep the WD board doing its own unlocking
On these portables the encryption lives on the USB board, so a failed one cannot simply be binned. The USB side was dead but the board still answered on the bench, so it stayed in the imaging path — and the volume unlocked exactly as it always had.
Verify to her deadline list, not to ours
She sent over which jobs were due when, and checking followed that order: the two drawing sets promised that week were opened page by page and released first, the rest verified behind them. A deadline cares about the right folders, not all the folders.
How it ended.
Every drawing came back, and both builders had their sets on schedule. A new habit came out of it too: her live jobs now copy across to a second drive at the end of each day.
