Digital forensics for Exeter. Recovered carefully, proven properly.

When a dispute is coming up, it's just as important how you handle the information as what that information actually says. Therefore, no one will have reviewed anything that comes into this lab prior to its image being created; each of our steps from imaging through final report preparation is documented; and our reports are designed so that another independent technical expert (or a judge) can review them line by line. We are independent and discreet, and honest about exactly what this lab is and isn't.

Four rules that never bend.

1 — Change nothingWe do not alter in any way the original media that may be presented in court proceedings. All media we receive is connected to a write blocker and an image is created prior to commencement of any forensic analysis on this media.
2 — Touch it only if qualifiedIn those cases where it becomes absolutely necessary to have direct access to original data, only someone who is competent to examine the data and capable of explaining their actions, as well as providing an explanation to the court regarding why this action was necessary, may attempt to do so.
3 — Leave an audit trailAll actions taken in relation to the exhibit are documented so thoroughly that another examiner could independently repeat those steps and obtain exactly the same results as we did.
4 — One person carries the caseThe responsibility for this entire investigation (and for adhering to the four principles set out here) lies entirely within the realm of one named examiner.

Talked through in confidence, quoted in writing Free

When you instruct us on a new matter, we will first hold a confidential conversation about what has occurred, which devices/accounts matter and what the evidence needs to establish. Following this, you will receive a single written quote, fixed prior to any examination commencing, and the initial scope of works does not incur any cost.

Image before anything

Each piece of evidence will be copied using a hardware write blocker prior to opening any files. The original is always the evidence. Viewing/reading/browsing it is what kills evidence.

Write-blocked captureOriginal media untouched
03

Examine the copy

The analysis occurs on the image, using tools such as OSForensics (file activity, deleted data, system artefacts, timelines), and each time an action occurs, it is logged at that point, rather than afterwards.

Report without spin

When findings are returned, they are expressed in plain English, addressing the question you asked, while providing technical details below them. Regardless of whether or not the answers reflect what you had hoped, the answers will be provided.

Captured, documented, court-ready

You get everything: the report, all of the exhibits and the files behind each exhibit, as well as the hashes, the continuity record and our working notes. If at some time in the future a tribunal or another expert wishes to verify anything, they will be able to follow the entire chain of evidence from start to finish.

Rules the bench works by

  • In our role in court cases we have a duty to the court: regardless of which party instructed us, and who paid us, our conclusions remain the same.
  • The Forensic Science Regulator's Code (it has had statutory authority since 2 October 2023, and Version 2 of the code came into effect on 2 October 2025) provides a governing framework for forensic services used to support criminal justice within England and Wales. The regulator does not have jurisdiction over matters related to civil litigation, employment or insurance, and we will identify clearly whether your case falls under one of these categories.
  • We will refuse to examine phones and tablets: half-baked (or half-processed) evidence is far worse than no evidence at all, therefore we decline rather than dabble.
  • Discretion is structural: cases are processed under reference number, not name, and findings go directly to the instructing party alone.

Why you need to secure your information privately from an early stage: in December 2022, HMICFRS reported that there were more than 25,000 devices waiting to be examined by police using their digital forensic services; in June 2025 the Westminster Commission on Forensic Science also found that, over a four-year period, more than 30,000 prosecutions in England and Wales failed due to lack of evidence (lost, missing or inadequate). Material properly preserved on day one will never enter those queues.

Named tools, real jobs.

SystemWhat it handlesWhy we rate it
X-Ways ForensicsIn-depth examination of disk images: artefact analysis, activity records, deleted data and timelinesA lean, efficient tool that allows us to use it extensively in a lab of our size, as opposed to perfunctorily.
OSForensicsComprehensive indexing and searching of Windows operating systems and captured image filesBroad first-pass discovery: registry entries and recent-use traces; history of USB devices.
PasswareUnlocking encrypted volumes when it is legal to do so, and when there is a recoverable credential. The honest encryption tool: it either gets in, or it doesn't, and we'll report which.
Atola Insight ForensicForensic imaging using hardware write protection, with hashing done simultaneously in the same pass. The acquisition log generates an unbroken record from the start as the image is acquired
ACE Lab PC-3000 & Data ExtractorFirmware-level work can be done when an exhibit is also a failing drive.A half-dead drive is not precluded from being considered as evidence; the two disciplines will be applied simultaneously.

Straight about our standing

  • We do: run all cases through the four ACPO/NPCC principles for the handling of digital evidence.
  • We do: image through write blockers and use MD5 and SHA-256 hashes for each image, and keep a custody record so that other examiners may audit it.
  • We do: work with recognised tools: OSForensics for examination and Passware for lawful decryption, always on the image, never on the exhibit.
  • We don't: claim UKAS or ISO accreditation, because we are accredited by neither. Where court rules require credibility disclosure of relevant facts, such as our lack of accreditation, this will be included first in all reports issued, and this information will also be made available to the public.
  • We don't: examine mobile phones or tablet computers, negotiate with ransomware crew members, or provide softer findings than supported by the evidence, based upon which party is paying for services rendered.

For what reason is this list provided? Since 2019, criminal procedures have required that an expert provides all information which may bear upon their credibility, including any gaps in accreditation. Stating this here in plain terms does not constitute humility; it ensures that the evidence remains standing if/when challenged.

Fresh from the casebook.

Where a Devon firm's project files went

A customer was certain that files had been stolen. The evidence pointed to a duller place: a wrongly configured sync setting had removed the files from the shared directory, and most were recoverable. A truthful explanation ended the argument quicker than any accusations could have.

Do

  • Do not continue to use the machine; any use makes changes to the machine.
  • Record everyone who has touched or used it, along with the date/time.
  • Store the leads, charger and passwords for each piece of equipment with the equipment.
  • Call us before you contact your in-house IT department to start an investigation.

Steer clear

  • Let IT have the first chance at it. Every time you click on something, the artefacts get rewritten.
  • Take copies of items (data) for your own protection.
  • Question a suspect prior to preserving their digital evidence.
  • Presume that "deleting" files means they are either gone forever or that someone is guilty.

Asked in private, answered plainly.

What exactly is digital forensics?

The capture, analysis and reporting of computer-based electronic evidence in such a manner that the results can withstand scrutiny: the device is copied ("imaged") before any examination occurs. All actions taken during the process are recorded. The results are documented in a manner that allows another examiner to follow the same steps.

What's the typical price of a digital forensics investigation in the UK?

The pricing of each matter will be based on that matter's unique factual circumstances; there is no charge for the initial scoping call. A single quotation will be provided in writing prior to beginning any work; it includes all costs associated with obtaining images, analysing those images and preparing your report. There are no charges incurred by the hour while working on a case.

Can you take on mobile phones?

No. Our services are focused on drives, computers, storage media and CCTV equipment; handsets, tablets and mobile devices are excluded from our service. If at some stage a mobile device does come into play with your investigation, we will be honest about this and refer you to a relevant specialist.

Are you accredited for this?

We are an independent laboratory and we do not have UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) or ISO accreditation. We clearly state this fact, including within each of our reports, as the applicable rules require. Instead, the "inspectable" method we use includes write-blocker imaging, hashing, documentation of all steps taken during the process and preparation of reports compliant with CPR 35 or CrimPR 19.
